Mon 1st October, 2007 15:07 » Oh WoW…

Funnily enough, even though I’m a complete nerd and spend my days in front of my computer, I’ve been able to keep myself away from World of Warcraft all on my own, despite its attractiveness. Then I actually go out in the real world, be social and meet a girl, and then on Satuday I found myself installing WoW. I started an undead mage while Tina guided me through the most basic things in order to get me started. She started a new character as well, and an hour or two later she told me it’d be nice to sit next to each other and play together, and asked if it wasn’t too late to come here. Of course I said it was alright, so she hurried to get her things together in order to catch the last bus going here somewhere around midnight.

Finally here, we tried getting internet to work on her laptop, but to no avail. The network connection icon would just say “retrieving network address” or whatever it was, and stall for a minute before it failed to get an IP address. I’ve had the issue before with another computer, but I can’t remember what the fuck had to be done to fix it. We tried my mom’s laptop, and it worked instantly on that. Figured I’d try copying over WoW to that computer even though it’s not exactly a powerhouse, but when Tina tried to log in she got a message about how her account has been authenticated before with the Burning Crusade addon, so she couldn’t use the normal WoW. And of course it was impossible to download Burning Crusade anywhere without running into problems with logging in and such things. So eventually we just gave up, which really sucked. I had looked forward to playing with her, it would probably have been the most romantic thing I’ve done in my life, hah.

It was nice to have her spend the night here anyway, we watched Seinfeld, I played WoW on my own a bit, and then we hopped into bed and enjoyed each others company there. Woke up insanely late on Sunday, then like our times together before, we just relaxed together in bed, cuddled and whatnot. Eventually she had to leave, so I followed her down to the bus terminal and said good bye. This last week has been an incredibly happy one.

I thought my utorrent was acting up today, because instead of my normal max speed of ~880kb/s or so, I saw that I was getting 1.1mb/s while downloading the 720p version of last night’s Prison Break season premiere. It was no fluke however, as I discovered that my ISP has upgraded our speed once again, from 7mbit/1mbit to 10mbit/1.25mbit. Fucking sweet!

Fri 17th August, 2007 20:35 » From bookmarks to RSS, and other things

I never really got into the whole RSS thing, I’ve always preferred to visit the author’s page and read the text in its intended design, and to sort of get a feeling for the differences between blogs, aestethically speaking. Firefox’ and Opera’s feed managers leaves something to be desired, which didn’t really help the cause any further either. I’ve known about dedicated feed readers, both programs and web applications, but I never got interested enough to ever check it out. Using Opera, it has been easy to check up on blogs manually so to speak, as I keep a folder with my blog bookmarks, which I then use the “open all folder items” option on to open all the various blogs in individual tabs. That solution has worked perfectly fine for me so far.

Today, for some reason, my view on RSS changed. I believe it was the single simple mention of Google Reader in a blog that triggered it, though I’m not sure why it was anything special this time. Either way, I went to check it out and put all my feeds in Google Reader, and I pretty much instantly deleted all my bookmarks, and I’m now using Google Reader exclusively to keep up with blogs. I must admit it is a rather lovely way to go on about it, it makes everything so easy to keep track of. If you read more blogs than is good for you, you should definitely check out Google Reader, much love.

I decided to check out Dexter some weeks ago, and so far it seems quite entertaining, but I’m still not completely sold. Unfortunately my Dexter viewing was cut short by the recent release of the Nip/Tuck season 4 DVD rips, which were quickly consumed. Season 4 was wonderfully entertaining, like the previous ones has been as well.

No idea why, but this week I purchased two domains, elastomania.us and elastomania.ws. Will see what I’ll do about those. I was thinking of creating some sort of skintatious/kopasite page where people can host their levels and have the whole automatic updating thing going on, but I don’t know if I’ll have the energy to create such a thing.

On Tuesday I had to help my mom and uncle with staining a house in Jessheim, where my uncle lives. Absolutely horrid work, but it felt sort of good to do something physical, even if it left me sore for days. Using a paint brush up and down with my mouse arm didn’t exactly work out too well. We only got one of the sides done, along with cleaning and scrubbing the three other sides, so the plan is to go back tomorrow and stain some more. I really really hope it rains tonight so it gets postponed.

Also, bought some more books!

Well, as long as this isn’t just the usual bullshit from politicians, I know who I’m voting for the next term.

Fri 16th February, 2007 08:56 » Movie list

As you might know, I watch a lot of movies — or movi…ez as Ramzi of thebroken fame would say (while you’re at the revision3 site, you should watch my favorite show to geek out to as well: diggnation).

Ugh, where was I? Movies, right. For my birthday last month I got this book from my cousin and uncle, 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die by Steven Jay Schneider. It’s a wonderful and thick hardcover book filled with a list of great movies, all in chronological order and with lots of details about each and every one. I wanted to find an easy way to check how many of these movies I had seen, so after searching on google for a bit I ran into this site where you can easily check your progress on various “best of” lists, like let’s say the infamous IMDb Top 250 for instance. I’ve previously used twofifty.org for this task, but the site is a bit bland and not updated very much anymore it seems. So when I found listsofbests.com (yea, not the greatest name), I quickly changed to that instead since you not only can check the Top 250, but it has a whole bunch of various lists, like the one I originally searched for, plus you can create your own as well. Granted, the site seems to be very buggy at the moment, going down pretty much all the time, but it gets the job done, and easily at that.

I have some gripes about it however. First off, everything links to an Amazon product detail page instead of a movie’s IMDb details (if you’re a frequent IMDb user you know how annoying it is not being able to check a movie’s details quickly). Obviously, they want to make money by Amazon referrals, but geez, a second accessible link to IMDb wouldn’t hurt. Then there’s the various issues with its perhaps ambitious, but poorly done AJAX scripting. It’s buggy as hell. You can only check off one movie at a time, and if you try for more the site will implode on itself so to speak, and the other movies you tried to check off will just stall and nothing happens, so you won’t be able to check off those movies again before you reload the page.

Pros and cons aside, it finally gave me a chance to make a list I’ve always wanted to do, but which I’ve failed at repeatedly — namely a list of my favorite movies, and in a somewhat ranked order at that. Please don’t take it too seriously, but for the first page or two it’s a pretty accurate list. Once I ended up adding the 200th movie or something, ranking every single one meticulously and precisely didn’t seem like the most important thing in the world, but again, they’re not random that’s for sure. So without further ado, my favorite movies, in ranking order (to some degree anyway).

As for those 1001 movies, I have currently seen 37% of them. Let’s hope I won’t die in the near future so I can finish the rest.

When you don’t have access to your own computer, along with all your media files, Pandora and the Last.fm player are lifesavers. I have never really fully appreciated them until these last few days. Discovered some great new songs and artists, hence I should probably remind myself to keep using these when I get back to my own computer.

Fri 10th November, 2006 05:17 » IMDB FAQ curiosity

I noticed a peculiar thing on IMDB while voting for a movie I just watched: in the “Fun Stuff” section in the left sidebar there has been an addition beneath trivia, goofs, soundtrack listing, crazy credits, alternate versions and movie connections called FAQ. I’m not sure how long this has been there, but seeing as I use IMDB pretty much every day and usually check the trivia section (which is right above the FAQ link) after watching a movie and hadn’t noticed it before now, I’d say it’s a fairly recent addition.

You can reach the FAQ for any movie just like you would with the other sections, by adding a /faq suffix to the URI. For instance, here’s the link for The Godfather: http://imdb.com/title/tt0068646/faq. I haven’t actually seen a movie that has a question in the FAQ yet, so I’m not sure about what sort of stuff will be added there. I presume it will be questions that tends to get asked over and over in the forum for each individual movie perhaps, but who knows.

Sat 16th September, 2006 16:53 » Allofmp3 and Bruce Springsteen

I had heard of allofmp3 a million times, but it wasn’t before today that I truly bothered checking it out. My oh my, how great it is. I’m usually content about downloading my stuff from p2p sources, but now and then there’s albums that you can’t find no matter what. And often you don’t have much choice when it comes to the quality either, who on earth wants some crappy 128kbps rip?

So thanks to the wonders of allofmp3, I now finally have Bruce Springsteen’s complete discography (excluding bootlegs and such stuff). It’s been a long time since a song has managed to give me goosebumps, but Bruce did just that today. Bruce Springsteen, Live in New York City (2001), disc one, track six: The River. It is so amazing live <3.
